MY STORY
I was a heartbroken single mum with a 20-week-old baby.
It was the day before Valentine’s Day when one conversation changed the future I thought I knew.
I couldn’t have known it then, but that heartbreak would eventually change the direction of my life in ways I could never have imagined.
Seventeen years and more than 1,000 women later, I know that the relationship can be over while the emotional bond is still very much alive. That’s where the story of Unbonding begins.

THE MISSING PIECE
You’ve broken up. Your brain hasn’t quite got the memo.
Maybe you’ve blocked him everywhere. Maybe you share children, so “just block him” is advice you could cheerfully throw out of the window.
Either way, he’s still taking up space. You’re making dinner while having an imaginary argument with him. Decoding a three-word message. Wondering whether he’s finally realised what he’s lost.
It’s like slamming the door, then spending the evening looking through the letterbox.
Sometimes you notice the feeling first: his name lights up your phone and your stomach drops before you’ve even read the message. A thought or reminder of him can set off your body’s stress response, even when you’re just trying to get on with your day.
I call these little habits “bond feeders”. Often automatic, they can keep the emotional connection going long after the relationship has ended.
Unbonding means recognising those patterns and learning gentler ways to respond. So a message about the kids can become just a message about the kids. And you can go to bed looking forward to tomorrow, rather than replaying yesterday.
Whether you need no-contact or calm-contact, the aim is the same: less him in your head. More room for you.
